It was a beautiful spring morning for Whakatū Rotary members and friends to plant native trees at Whakapuaka Mouri, north of Nelson City.
Club co-president Julie Bryant and president-elect Troy Stade joined in on the morning’s activities, which included planting seedlings and protecting them with biodegradable plant wraps.
The project, which is overseen by the Tasman Environmental Trust, has former farm and forestry land along the banks of the Wakapuaka River and two of its tributaries being planted with natives.
The largest restoration project in Nelson on private land is now aiming to plant 13 hectares with over 70,000 natives in riparian margins, introduce extensive predator control measures, and manage weeds.
